Testing the waters with the B-Craft Akoya

After a succesful technical launch in May, it was time to put her through some thorough testing. at Port Aventura, close to home, we did just that.

We had one month to get her ready. One month to test, adjust, test, adjust and perfect. Testing meant putting her into the water, adjusting meant taking her out, into the shed for some adjustments.

The main problem we faced after her technical launch in May, was the steering system. Since we developed a custom steering system, it was difficult to predict the practical outcome of our theoretical executions. This principle applied to pretty much all of the features of the B-Craft Akoya. First time in the water, the steering showed some lack in reaction to the steering wheel. That meant: back to the shed. Mind you, we were also testing and running the engine for the first time. Hearing the Volvo Penta 430's 8 cylinders roar for the first time was the stuff of dreams.

The shed - which were in this case the facilities of Interboating - provided opportunities to improve on the more hands-on issues. The steering system was one of them, but also making sure the finishing details were up to standards. From custom locks, hatch closings, down to the sound of the lids on the stern, we wanted to make sure every detail, be it in performance or usability, was perfect.

That perfection was constantly tested on the water. We had our first top speed: 45kts. That is right on the calculated speed. Given that we are - being a prototype - slightly over weight, that was a huge promise for the improved production model, with which we could get up to 50+kts, based on these tests. We had our first tow. Joris personally assessed the Rig for the first time. A thrilling experience. We tried action, but also leasure. We wakeboarded, went fast and put up the Rig for the first time, but we also 'chilled' with the bimini and sunbeds up.

The whole month of July was a rollercoaster of emotions, one that was overall amazingly positive.

We did it.

We built our dream.

It was time to share it with the world.

In july, The Boat Show will be reviewing the B-Craft Akoya for the first time. Someone else other than us would be the judge of our work. A daunting thought. However we were ready and we could not wait until July.
